Expectant 02/05/2010

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godlinesslooking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. - 2 Peter 3:11-15

This semester in Psalm we are going to be contemplating on the idea of expectancy. Every book in the New Testament speaks of Jesus Christ's second coming in glory except for Philemon, 2 and 3 John (And those are each one chapter long!). It was obviously a very prominent aspect of the lives and worship of early Christians. It caused them to view their possessions and circumstances in a way that was completely counter-cultural.

As we progress through the semester, we will look at how a perspective of expectancy shapes what we choose to spend our time on and how we minister to others. What if we lived every moment fully realizing that it might be the moment Christ chooses to come back. What would we want to be doing in that moment? Peter warns us to pursue peace and spotlessness, realizing that Christ's return is imminent.
